Session 1: 8:30 - 9:30 am Room 25C

Title: Educational Blogging: Flattening the Classroom Walls!
Presenter: Linda Yollis, Teacher; Ms. Kathleen Morris
Description: Australian and American teachers share how they successfully integrate technology and learning through global collaborations. Discover how your students can become global citizens!

Video: kids singing a hello song about how people around the world say hello in different countries. Kids are cute singing and waving with piano music in the back. Next video shows Australian kids saying hello and thank you for their books to another school they are skyping with. Another video of kids singing while skyping.   • Linda does a lot of pairing up, only 5 laptops in class and a computer lab in school, at beginning she types all the post, but then slowly the kids write the posts, her blog won Best Class Blog
  • Some projects they did only with one laptop. It's about having fun.
  • Australian Teacher Morris - she has been teaching 2nd grade, but will be teaching 4th great, Never to young to blog and do globally collaboration
  • Her resources were only a few PCs, not she has 20 netbooks between the students, most of the student have access at home
  • Team Teaching Blog: 4KM and 4KJ @ Leopold Primary School
  • They use different platform: Morris uses Edublogs / Yollis using eBlogger, its about how you use not really the platform
  • How they started doing these project together: started with a comment on one of their blogs. Yollis left comment on Morris's blog. They made a post about the connection.
  • Teacher's need to look around and see other blogs and make connections. There are so many benefits for the kids, educational and communication
  • Benefits of Blogging: Blogging is an authentic audience. global connections, social skills, etc. (see slide)
  • Comments are always moderated
  • Students perspective of benefits of blogging: (video)
    • learn spelling and writing
    • improved writing
    • learn about other culture
    • conversations with other people and how they live
    • learn to be safe on the internet, full name, passwords
    • my parents like reading and learning what I do in school
  • Cluster Map - shows the global audience, students like to see that, feel their duty to write and comment at a high level because others are reading, you can teach geography skills, math lessons (place value of the visiting counter, average visitor count, predict when hit a certain numbers, time zones)
  • Parent Participation
    • family blogging month and events: family blogging after noon with the parents and students trying blogging, teaching the parents how to blog,
    • education: newsletters, handouts, videos: to help the parents to learn about using
    • Virtual Volunteers: parents can do it virtually on the blog, parents sign up to write comments on the blog
    • Skyping with a parent
      • Parent response: daughters have become better readers and writers by writing comments instead of on a piece of paper, making friends in othe countries or states, expose to other cultures, families of the kids can keep up with them
      • Kids: we love blogging!
    • Students and teacher works together on one blog
  • Project 1: Collaboration Corner
    • Collaboration through the comments section. Morris and Yollis students write in the comments.
    • They they wanted to deepen and focus on learning
    • They have a joint blog - working on projects together
    • Example: food and healthy eating
      • lunch box project: students would write about what they got during lunch
    • TOOLS they use during the projects; they figure out what they what the outcome to be before just taking any web 2.0 tools. Tools help to enhace the lesson or project. Not just using web 2.0 tools, but purposeful
      • fotobabble: talking photos
      • voicethread: students can leave comments on the other student's project
      • videos: using imovie, vimeo, etc.
  • Project 2: Ugandan Global Project
    • Enhance social consciences and include other blogs
    • 6-weeks project
    • students raised funds for the Uganda friends for their education, $20,000 they all raised
    • all the collaborate with several school in US
    • Parents were so interested the project

    • 6 class 4 countries
    • They did a run walk for an hour at 10 am, different for each class depending on the tie zone
    • School in Uganda was able to build a playground with the funds
    • They used Google docs to collaborate with all the teachers, used hastags on twitter

      • they made on money, currency about each countires did about their money

      • reflection for whole project, post onto the wall using virtual post-its, used to wrap it up
  • Project 3: Our World, Our Stories
    • EduBlog Group Award 2011
    • Australia, Belize, Canada, Ghana,
    • Each school class would have a week to do a topics, topics by the kids (recess, food, traditional stories, songs, etc.)
    • Green screan to show environment or used voicethread
    • Conclusion: created an audio book, students from all the classes read pages from the book and put it all together,
    • TOOL: Sliderocket (Whoever You Are; asked author and illustrator to replicate, yes. Then they got into the project by blogging and commenting to the kids blogs, helped them learn and encourage the kids how to write and illustrate)
    • Song: Make New Friends to wrap of the project. All students and teachers. (see video)

    • wrote a narrative, student submitted ideas for idea, then voted
    • Each class would write a little then another class would pick up and continue the story

    • QuadBlogging.net - signed up with other classes around the world, risk you don't' know who they are, different standards or expectations, 4-week time one school focused for each week and the other will comment

  • It's all about building relationships.
  • Look for similarities, blogging experience, similar grader, high standards in writing, be genuine when you comment and consistent, comment as much as you can to be involved, build on the ones that you get feedback from because may lead to collaboration, be focused on a few blogs to visit,
